How to Make Crispy Southern Hushpuppies
- In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt. Stir in the finely chopped onion, egg, and milk until just combined. Remember, overmixing can lead to dense hushpuppies.
- In a large skillet, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C). Drop a small spoonful of batter into the oil to test—if it sizzles, it’s ready for frying.
- Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, flipping halfway through.
