Dough Preparation
- In a stand mixer, combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, powdered sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix on medium speed until well blended for about 1-2 minutes.
- Add softened unsalted butter and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Mix until a soft dough ball forms, roughly 3-4 minutes should do the trick.
- Split your cookie dough into two equal halves. Use red gel food coloring to dye one half. Mix until the color is uniform and vibrant!
Dough Shaping
- Place each portion of dough between sheets of wax paper and roll out to an 11x9 inch rectangle. Chill for one hour in the refrigerator to firm up.
- Carefully stack the vibrant red dough on top of the vanilla layer. Brush a little water over the vanilla layer to help them stick. Trim the edges for a neat finish!
- Gently roll the layered dough into a tight cylinder, ensuring it’s compact to create those beautiful swirls.
- Roll the log in Valentine's Day sprinkles for extra festiveness. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill or freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the log into ¼ inch thick cookies, then bake for 15-17 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before enjoying!
