Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Gluten-free flour can be used.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Substitute with margarine for dairy-free.
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract Almond extract can be used for a twist.
For the Color
  • 1 tablespoon Red Food Coloring (gel) Avoid liquid food coloring.
For the Decoration
  • 1/2 cup Valentine's Day Sprinkles Substitute with other themed sprinkles.

Equipment

  • Stand mixer
  • Baking Sheet
  • wax paper
  • plastic wrap

Method

Dough Preparation
  1. In a stand mixer, combine all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, powdered sugar, and granulated sugar. Mix on medium speed until well blended for about 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add softened unsalted butter and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Mix until a soft dough ball forms, roughly 3-4 minutes should do the trick.
  3. Split your cookie dough into two equal halves. Use red gel food coloring to dye one half. Mix until the color is uniform and vibrant!
Dough Shaping
  1. Place each portion of dough between sheets of wax paper and roll out to an 11x9 inch rectangle. Chill for one hour in the refrigerator to firm up.
  2. Carefully stack the vibrant red dough on top of the vanilla layer. Brush a little water over the vanilla layer to help them stick. Trim the edges for a neat finish!
  3. Gently roll the layered dough into a tight cylinder, ensuring it’s compact to create those beautiful swirls.
  4. Roll the log in Valentine's Day sprinkles for extra festiveness. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill or freeze until firm, about 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the log into ¼ inch thick cookies, then bake for 15-17 minutes until the edges are golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before enjoying!
