Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Can substitute with brown sugar for a richer flavor.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Use salted or unsalted based on preference.
  • 2 large Eggs Room temperature eggs work best.
  • 1 cup Self-Raising Flour Can use all-purpose flour with baking powder if not available.
  • 1/2 cup Unsweetened Black Cocoa Powder Regular cocoa can be a substitute, but the color and flavor will differ.
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder Ensure it is fresh for best results.
  • 1/4 tsp Salt Omit if using salted butter.
  • 1 cup Milk Use any milk type; dairy or non-dairy alternatives are acceptable.
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract Can substitute with almond extract for a different taste.
For the Buttercream
  • 1/2 cup Unsalted Butter Use room temperature butter for easier mixing.
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar Sift to remove lumps before using.
  • 1 drop Green Food Coloring Adjust the amount based on desired brightness.
For the Decorations
  • 1 cup Orange Fondant Make sure it is kneaded well for pliability.
  • 1 cup Black Fondant Same as above for kneading.
  • 1 tsp CMC Powder Helps in humid environments.
  • 1 cup Sprinkles Use themed sprinkles for a Halloween touch.

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Mixing Bowl
  • whisk
  • Baking Pan
  • jar
  • Rolling Pin
  • Knife
  • damp brush

Method

Preparation
  1. Knead CMC into orange fondant until pliable, then roll into strips for the witches’ legs. Cut these strips into pieces, and shape black fondant into shoes to attach to the orange legs using a damp brush for adhesion.
  2. Preheat your oven to 340°F (170°C). Cream together the butter and sugar until fluffy, then whisk in the eggs. Combine and sift together the dry ingredients, then alternate adding them with milk while folding in vanilla. Bake in a greased square pan for 45-50 minutes, or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool completely.
  3. In a mixing bowl, cream the unsalted butter until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar until combined, then incorporate vanilla extract and green food coloring until you achieve the desired vibrant hue.
  4. Cut the cooled cake into circles to fit inside your jars. Layer these cake pieces with buttercream and festive sprinkles. Top off with additional buttercream, then insert the fondant legs into the jars for charming decoration.
